“and I pray that the fellowship of your faith may become effective through the knowledge of every good thing which is in you for Christ’s sake.” (Philemon 1:6, NASB)
Have you experienced loneliness— even while surrounded by others?
Maybe the others were strangers.
Maybe they were people you call neighbors, friends, coworkers, or family members.
Maybe the others were even your Christian brothers and sisters.
No matter who we are with or what their relationship, loneliness creates a sinking feeling that paralyzes us with a sense of feeling unseen and uncared for.
But, as Christians, should we feel this way? Do we know who we are in Christ? Do we know what we are called to as the body of Christ?
In Paul’s letter to Philemon, Paul prays “that the fellowship of your faith may become effective through the knowledge of every good thing which is in you for Christ’s sake” (Philemon 1:6, NASB)
What does this mean?
God is calling us to love boldly those in the faith with us. He wants us to forgive each other. Live in peace with each other. Show gentleness towards one another.
… And this means being truly interested and intentional in regard to sharing our lives with one another.
As Christians, we belong to each other—even when we choose not to behave as though we are one in Christ.
Sweet friend, will we embrace God’s Truth and our calling—will we embrace each other?
Lord, I know what it feels like to be in a room full of people—yet feel incredibly lonely. It hurts me to think that I may contribute to others feeling this same way. Help me to love my brothers and sisters in Christ. And forgive me for the times I have not. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
